Hi,

the web-server boa, shipped with uClinux-dist does compile and  
supports cgi, maybe it is worth a look. Using .htpasswd with CGI  
might be possible, see user/boa/cgi.c, line 442.
I had the same trouble with appWeb, at least I gave up.
