Yes, the shell is not expanding the filenames properly.

I use ubuntu 6.10 too. You should try this:
song at ubuntu:~$ echo crt{i,begins}
crti crtbegins
If it is the same as mine, it's ok. 
I have heard that ubuntu 6.10 uses dash as default shell, and in dash, the 
patten above won't be expanded, and I have try this on my machine.
Maybe my system was upgraded from 6.04, so the default shell is still bash.
You can type 'bash' before compiling.
