I've not used smbmount until now, because I mostly work on a Linux
host and use NFS to access my compiled programs. But imho you need
support for SMBFS in the kernel (somewhere under "Network File
Systems"), and the smbmount program from the applications. There is
an user/smbmount, but I don't know if that still works or if you
have to use smbmount/smbumount of the samba package and hope that
your compilation problems are gone if you don't build the whole
smbd/nmbd stuff.
Again: There is no option to use TFTP?
