I enabled modules and built for tne 5282EVB and sure enough it
dies on booting (I think in the same way you originally
described).

The problem looks to be related to the __param section
data ending up being on an odd boundary. You can fix this
with the following patch to linux-2.6.x/arch/m68knommu/kernel/vmlinux.lds.S:

--- vmlinux.lds.S       17 Aug 2005 00:00:42 -0000      1.19
+++ vmlinux.lds.S       4 Oct 2005 03:49:31 -0000
@@ -275,6 +275,7 @@
                 *(__ksymtab_strings)

                 /* Built-in module parameters */
+               . = ALIGN(4) ;
                 __start___param = .;
                 *(__param)
                 __stop___param = .;

At least now I can boot the 5282EVB with modules and sysfs
enabled.

Regards
Greg
