I enabled modules and built for tne 5282EVB and sure enough it
dies on booting (I think in the same way you originally

The problem looks to be related to the __param section
data ending up being on an odd boundary. You can fix this
with the following patch to linux-2.6.x/arch/m68knommu/kernel/vmlinux.lds.S:

At least now I can boot the 5282EVB with modules and sysfs
